Valéria Ribeiro de Sousa, daughter of a farmer, lives in the Congonhal neighbourhood in Lambari, Minas Gerais. Her journey in coffee cultivation began through her father, Francisco Paulino, who started in 1976. Since then, the family has continued working with this incredible fruit, rich in aromas and flavours.
Coffee has become Valéria’s passion, and every day she dedicates herself to learning and improving, always striving to harvest the best fruits with proper post-harvest techniques. Today, coffee farming is the main source of livelihood for her family, including her siblings and children. This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation, and now her two sons are actively involved in the cultivation, helping refine the farming methods even further.
Valéria and her family continue to hand-pick coffee cherries from younger plants to preserve their vitality for future harvests, while also using semi-mechanized processes. She began working in coffee farming in 1980, at a time when everything was done manually. Back then, there were no brush cutters or picking machines to assist with the challenging mountain coffee farming.
Mountainous terrain poses difficulties, but the best coffee beans are found at the highest altitudes. Valéria is proud to say that her family farm is located in this magnificent region, surrounded by lush green hills. She is happy to share a part of her story.
